Welcome!

Music is a wonderful channel. It is the spice that sees us through the work day, the jubilance that knits two souls together at the altar, and the friend that consoles us when we feel the pain of loss. It is art that is alive, art that is ever-changing and fluid. It helps us to celebrate, to worship, and to grieve. It is the enjoyment of many, the passion of some, and the profession of a few. In the words of 19th-century German poet Berthold Auerbach, "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

The piano is a perfect introduction to the world of music. It poses such a simple idea: just press a key to hear a sound. J.S. Bach once said of another keyboard instrument, the organ, "There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time, and the instrument plays itself." While that may sound humorous, it is no surprise that playing the piano involves more than simply pressing keys.

What is less obvious is that learning to play the piano produces more than the sound of hammers on strings. On the surface, it teaches us to read music, tests our coordination, and trains us to listen. At a deeper level, it builds discipline, sharpens the mind, and encourages creativity. At its core, it fosters self-expression, captures the heart, and nourishes the soul. As Beethoven wisely asserted, "To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." Learning to play the piano, then, goes far beyond knowing how to "hit the right keys."
